What is Softr?
Softr operates as a visual application builder engineered to help teams construct software applications, client portals, and operational tools without writing code. The platform automatically generates functional user interfaces, structured database tables, and backend execution logic based on conversational text prompts or manual layout configuration. Organizations implement the system to build software customized around their specific internal processes, replacing standard commercial software that contains unneeded features or requires high recurring license expenses.
Data management within the system is handled through native built-in databases or by linking directly to external data sources without requiring migration steps. Real-time native integrations connect with 17 or more data platforms, including relational database engines such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Supabase, SQL Server, MariaDB, and BigQuery. Software builders can also connect spreadsheet systems such as Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel, or link cloud productivity tools like Airtable, Notion, monday.com, ClickUp, Coda, SmartSuite, Xano, Salesforce, and HubSpot. REST API links allow connections to other custom data services.
User interfaces are constructed using flexible visual blocks such as data grids, list views, charts, Kanban boards, detail displays, and conditional forms. Creators can instruct an artificial intelligence assistant to assemble complete page layouts, navigation flows, and utility screens, or adjust components visually. Software published on the platform can also be deployed as downloadable Progressive Web Apps, allowing mobile users to install applications onto phone home screens without completing mobile app store publishing steps.
Data privacy and system access are managed via server-side security logic rather than client-side prompts. The platform provides pre-built identity tools including email logins, magic links, Google authentication, and Single Sign-On capabilities for Okta and other identity providers. Granular permission rules allow administrators to establish user groups and define precise viewing or editing rights across specific pages, interface blocks, records, and fields. This allows external clients and internal staff to access a shared portal while remaining restricted to their authorized data.
Operational processes are automated through built-in background workflows that connect client interactions to internal database updates and external software tools. Workflows can integrate artificial intelligence models from providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, and Mistral to perform automated summarization, text generation, or web scraping. Additionally, workflows connect to electronic signature platforms, accounting platforms such as Xero and QuickBooks, messaging systems, and external automation services including Make and Zapier.
